In 2009, our company became a pioneer in the yerba mate industry by being the first in the world to offer Fair Trade certified yerba mate, a reflection of our dedication to the quality of our products, our environment, and the yerba mate producers in South America. According to Wolfgang Kathe of the Institute for Marketecology in 2009, “It is a testament to Guayakí’s devotion to its mission that it has succeeded in becoming the first Fair for Life social and fair trade certified yerba mate company…Guayakí will be the catalyst to drive the principals of fair trade for the entire yerba mate industry.”

The vision of Fair for Life is a world where trade is a driving force for positive and sustainable change benefitting people and their environment. Today, all the organic yerba mate that Guayakí Sustainable Rainforest Products, Inc. purchases and imports from Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay is Fair Trade certified according to the Fair for Life standard. That standard of Fair Trade certification is carried through to Guayakí’s retail products, Traditional Loose Leaf and Traditional Mate Bags. Fair Trade purchases generate a higher price for producers, fair wages for harvesters, and a Fair Trade premium for investment in their communities.
